The examples the surge tester is assembled with the test line selector to make the test procedure easy.

 

Example 1 : test for 3-phase motor

  • It is an example that the surge tester is connected to the line selector so the operator can test 3 times on each other coils easily with out in convenience of exchanging the connection of test leads from surge tester to another coils.
    3 phase motor must be tested 3 times on each phase. At first the operator catch and save the sample waveform of any of 3 phase coil, then the sample waveform shall be refered to other phase's tested result and displayed the difference.
    To make easy the test procedure, the line selector has 3 test buttons for each phase on the front panel.

Example 2 : test for transformer

      b. jig of transformer
  • It is a transformer test system that the surge tester is connected to the line selector and test jig which is designed easily load and unload the SMPS transformer-under-test from the jig.
    SMPS transformer has 14 lead out pins in dual line each has 7 pins.
    To make the test procedure easy and simple, the jig pins are connected with some jumper wires to touch each pins and the winding coils connect in serial.
    So the test procedure is finished with only 3 times, the jig shown on the left side of the photo is a spare that is used.

Example 3 : magnet test of car starter motor
  • Digital Surge Tester (Model : KT-903D) + surge tester controller
  • Auxiliary equipment
    : surge tester controller (model waveforms of memory selective type)
  • Inside of the magnet which is assembled with the start motor, has a pull in coil(P coil) and a holding coil(H coil), the surge test shall be done to each of the P coil and H coil, once.
    But each of P coil and H coil can not be compared to each other, because of the different characteristics, so each of the sample waveform of P coil and H coil must be saved on each memory area.
    It means the test system has 3 combined model select thumb-wheel digital switches to select the models. The test shall be done in other of sequence automatically when the test button is pushed once.
    And the judgment depends on the test result is displayed with Good / Bad lamps and buzzer.
  • One of the end of the magnet coil is connected to the Case(GND). So, it can't be done the hipot(puncture) test.

Characteristics of analog surge tester

Though the digital type of surge tester is used widely, the reason that the analog type of surge tester is popular means analog type of surge tester has still its merit to use convenience.
Analog surge tester makes continuously the corona spark when after the judgement is done, it makes easy to find out the bad point of the product, and easy to repair.

Surge tester of KAST 

KAST's Surge Testers are divided for the use of 3∼40 ㎸ by output voltage, and subdivided into type C of manual judgement type, type A of auto judgement type, type L of exclusive use for low inductance product test. 

Necessity of Surge Test 

Surge test is necessary to all winding products(Motor, Trans, Relay, Magnet, Solenoid, Ignitor, and the like). Surge test is the only test method that directly applies an electrical stress to the coil part of which inside is not looked through, and makes it possible to test through the inside. Thus it can take the quality and security(life) test on products. All winding products during its use, generates much higher Impulse than real operating voltage, which Impulse can break coil itself. Accordingly, in advance, have to try to apply higher voltage than that and decide whether it stands the voltage or not. Also, in this process, it is possible to analyze the following properties by analyzing the free run wave form generated right after applying Impulse voltage.

  • Turn-to-turn short : phenomenon shorted between the near coils
  • Layer-to-layer short : short between up coil and down coil
  • Phase-to-phase short : short between each other phases
  • Pinholes : bad insulation of enameled wire
  • Scratch : scratch of coil by damage 
  • Corona discharge : Arc or Spark phenomenon - Spark originated by the weak of dielectric strength between coils.
  • Misconnection
  • Quality of coil(Q) : compared with sample products
  • Inductance of coil(L) : compared with sample products

Surge test requires only 0.5 second. Because Surge tester already performs 30 times of Impulse voltage test only in 0.5 second.
